Subject: Chameleon 4.0 Problem
I just upgraded from the Chameleon Sampler to Chameleon 4.0.
My new Chameleon has not arrived yet. It is expected on Tue. So I downloaded
the test drive from ftp.netmanage.com.
Everything seems to work fine except for the mail client. I get frequent
EMM386 memory errors associated with 00B8:0B22. I have tried emptying my
autoexec.bat file and my config.sys file of all non-essential files. Sometimes
the mail client works just fine. Sometimes it crashes with the same EMM386
error message.
I am running Chameleon 4.0 temporarily in 4mb of RAM.
Has anyone else experience this problem?
Mitch

If your problem is dynamic addressing, then the Chameleon Sampler that
comes with several Internet books will not help. The Sampler version
handles SLIP, CSLIP, and PPP. However, the PPP is only for static IP
addresses.
The Commercial version of Chameleon (version 4.0) will handle dynamic IP
addresses. There should be no need to play around with any scripts,
either, at most installations. Just leave the IP address as 0.0.0.0. The
dynamic IP address will be assigned during the initial PPP negotiation.
I just went through this with our system. A change in the NetBlazer
hardware and software necessitated a change to dynamic IP addressing. I
had to upgrade to the commercial version of Chameleon.
You can upgrade your Chameleon Sampler for the full commercial version of
Chameleon 4.0 for only $125.00. Considering that it sells for $400.00,
it's a very good deal. An extra year of maintenance releases, a good
investment with all the changes in TCP/IP software currently, is just
another $60.00.
The Chameleon Sampler is just that. It is only a taste of the full
commercial Chameleon package. It is well worth the $125.00 upgrade.

I and another fellow Internaut tried it on 14.4 PPP dialup: It does not work.
The programs will connect but both IVCs lock up when either transmits. IVC has
a long way to go yet.

Subject: WS_GOPHER CRASHING
MY WS_GOPHER IS CRASHING MORE FREQUENTLY NOW;
The following message appears in trumpet after the crash
task 1CE7 did not call WSACleanup
task 26B7 did not call WSACleanup
it happens most often sometime after I cancel a retrieval of an item that does
not respond. Sometimes the crash occurs well after I've terminated the
program. It seems like a probelm that could be fixed easily.
Still it's a bit better than hgopher.

Subject: NNTP News readers to replace Chameleon
I have the commercial version of Chameleon with a 14.4 PPP connection.
The mailreader is okay, but the newsreader is massively slow. I would
like to try the WINQVT/NET newsreader, but I cannot get WINQVT to
start. Chameleon does not use a hosts file. Is that the problem? Are
there any other NNTP news readers which are faster? (I'm using GNUS
with UNIX right now). Thanks for any help! BTW, I'm using Windows for
Workgroups.
